For my 5th anniversary, I wanted to share my story through this song.
I sang a song that means a lot to me, and it almost feels like it was written just for me.
“I Shared A Kiss with Hatsune Miku” is a song by MikitoP about a singer who moved to Tokyo chasing something bigger, but ends up feeling stuck, alone, and unsure of themselves while just trying to get by. This song and its meaning hit me on a personal level. After finishing my studies, I moved away from my family to the city to live independently, and I had to figure things out on my own, including everything I experienced in VTubing.
My very first song cover was a Hatsune Miku song.
With only a flip phone and a laptop, I followed in the footsteps of my virtual idol, hoping my voice would reach farther across the internet.
When I first started, the best part was the joy and innocence of beginning a journey without any real goal. Just creating without overthinking the small, complicated details. I simply wanted to see my ideas take shape in a song cover filled with my feelings and love for singing. View counts or what comments I’d get weren’t in my thoughts. Heck, I didn’t even realize I was already a ‘creator’ back then. I just wanted my voice to reach even one person, and at the time, that was all that mattered.
But of course, not everything is all rainbows and sunshines. I’ve had my fair share of rejections and discouragements while trying to put myself out there for many more people to discover. After all, I wanted to be an idol. There were times where I felt like I was just a speck of dust in this big, big world. I learned whatever I could, whether it’s singing, digital art, video editing, anything that could add value to me as a creator. I became a jack of all trades, master of none. And still, the world has a way of making you feel like it’s not enough. Even now, I sometimes think that everything I’ve taught myself is mediocre, and that there will always be people better than me. But I kept going because I believed that my passion and hard work could take me somewhere I never imagined. And somehow, it did. Right here on this very channel.
As Isla Coleman, I was able to experience the things I used to just watch as a fan: debuting as a VTuber under a company, getting a 3D model, performing in concerts, selling my own merch. For the first time, I knew what it felt like to be on the other side of the screen.
But there were also things no one really prepares you for: negative comments, the different behaviors and encounters you’ll have with the people you meet, and the rejections that never really go away from people who didn’t believe in you. It made me miss the innocence and naivety of when I was first starting out. The world is scary, and it still feels like too much for one person to handle. But one thing I forgot about the old days, what truly mattered: that even if it was just one person, someone would listen, someone would stay. In fact, there are so many of you and I’m really thankful you’ve stayed with me this long. You’ve pulled me out of my lowest points, especially when I thought about quitting more times than I can count.
While my story is not a breakthrough story in any means, I’m just happy with how far I’ve come, not just as a VTuber, but as a person, and it reached you as well.
Five years have passed, and I’ve seen so many people come and go. But I’m still here and I’m still me. Maybe a few years from now, you’ll forget about me. So for now, let’s cherish the present, and I’ll do the same.
TLDR: Thanks for believing in me. I’m only here because I still have people who believe in me.
