H3 Flight No. 6 is Japan's first large liquid-fueled rocket to lift off using only three LE-9 liquid rocket engines, without solid rocket boosters (SRB-3). This is the first flight of the Type 30 configuration, and a milestone mission that completes the full lineup of H3 vehicle configurations.
This mission will deliver the Vehicle Evaluation Payload-5 (VEP-5) and six small secondary satellites — PETREL, STARS-X, BRO-22, VERTECS, HORN-L, and HORN-R — into a sun-synchronous orbit (SSO).
Flight No. 6 also features the following new initiatives:
- First use of the hold-down system for a Type 30 launch, which keeps the vehicle restrained on the mobile launcher until all three LE-9 engines are confirmed to have started up normally
- A newly developed micro-satellite mounting adapter, aimed at acquiring technical knowledge for carrying multiple satellites on the H3
- Engine throttling, reducing thrust to about 66% during the latter part of the first-stage burn to improve the payload environment
Liftoff is scheduled for June 12 at 9:53:59 a.m. Japan Standard Time. After liftoff, payload fairing separation is planned at approximately 192 seconds, first-stage main engine cutoff (MECO) at about 214 seconds, second-stage first engine cutoff (SECO1) at about 907 seconds, and separation of PETREL/STARS-X at about 968 seconds.
