Video Description
Enjoy a calming reading of a riveting scene from Jane Austen's classic novel Emma. Subtitles are available in many languages, so please choose whichever you like in order to learn English with me.
Jane Austen is one of the most celebrated English authors of all time, and even though her books are hundreds of years old, the language has evolved very well and is a great place to start learning some more complex and decorative English without jumping to something difficult like Shakespeare, which even fluent English speakers struggle to read!
Towards the end of this reading is a word, "fagged", that while harmless in old English, carries a very offensive connotation in modern day. I've chosen to leave it in the reading out of respect for the original text, but if you are learning English it is important that you know and recognize the word so you can avoid using it inappropriately. When visiting any country while learning its language, be respectful and be prepared to apologise if you overstep a cultural norm.
