2005. On Shadow Moses Island, a remote island off the coast of the Alaska Peninsula, the Aleutian Islands, and the Fox Islands, the high-tech special forces unit FOXHOUND and the next-generation special forces under its command suddenly launched an uprising and seized the island's nuclear weapons disposal facility.

Calling themselves the "Sons of Big Boss," they demanded 50 million dollars from the U.S. government along with the body of Big Boss. They warned that if their demands were not met within 24 hours, they would launch a nuclear weapon from Shadow Moses.

The government called in Roy Campbell, the former commander of FOXHOUND and a retired colonel, to lead the operation to suppress the uprising. Campbell, in turn, brought back former FOXHOUND operative Solid Snake.

Snake was given two objectives. The first was to infiltrate the nuclear weapons disposal facility alone and rescue two hostages: Donald Anderson, the director of DARPA, and Kenneth Baker, the president of ArmsTech.

The second was to determine whether the terrorists truly had the ability to launch a nuclear weapon. If they did, Snake was to stop them, eliminate the terrorists, and disarm them.

Because the operation was highly classified, Snake would have to carry it out alone.

Although Snake sensed there was something suspicious about the mission, he reluctantly agreed after learning that the terrorist leader was Liquid Snake, a man who looked almost exactly like him and even shared the same "Snake" codename.
